Financially Independent Person (FIP) Residence Permit

The Financially Independent Person (FIP) Residence Permit is a residence option for non-EU/EEA citizens who want to live in Greece without working there. It is commonly used by retirees, people living on investment income, or individuals with substantial passive income and generally by people who want to enjoy living in Greece long-term without making an investment and who have reliable income from outside Greece.

Here are the main points:

  • Purpose: Allows you to reside in Greece if you can financially support yourself without taking employment or running a business in Greece.

  • Income requirement: You must demonstrate a stable income of at least €3,500 per month. If applying with family, the required amount increases by 20% for a spouse and 15% for each dependent child. Income is typically proven through pensions, investment income, rental income, or other passive income, though Greek authorities may also consider sufficient funds held in a bank account.

  • Visa requirement: Most applicants must first obtain a Type D national visa from the Greek consulate in their country of residence before applying for the residence permit in Greece.

  • Health insurance: Private health insurance that covers your stay in Greece is required.

  • Validity: The permit is generally issued for 3 years and can be renewed if you continue to meet the financial and other requirements.

  • Employment restrictions: This permit does not allow you to work or conduct business activities in Greece.

  • Travel: As a Greek residence permit holder, you can travel within the Schengen Area under the normal Schengen rules.
